Welcome to the X4L Medical Staff Development Resources Website.

Anabolic steroids are essentially the name given to synthetic versions of the male sex hormone, testosterone, in fact, the actual name for this male sex hormone is anabolic androgenic steroids which tend to be abbreviated as AAS. It has the word anabolic in it because of the fact that this is the thing that helps to build increased amounts of muscle, the androgenic part refers to the increased male sexual traits. Anabolic steroids can actually be legally purchased however they can only be brought this way if you have a valid medical reason for wanting to use them, some of the conditions that people suffer from where they need anabolic steroids to help them include delayed puberty, diseases such as AIDS and cancer which can all result from steroid hormone deficiency. Although there are many bodybuilders and athletes who end up abusing these anabolic steroids as they want to try and maximise the amount of performance enhancing effects that come from these drugs, bodybuilders may not necessarily be concerned about the performance enhancing effects but instead the way that it improves their physical appearance.

There are two main ways as to how anabolic steroids are taken, they can be taken in the liquid form where the users inject it or they can be taken in a pill form where people consume it orally. There are even some anabolic steroids that can be applied as a sort of gel on top of the skin however these are a much rarer form to come across. When people abuse anabolic steroids, their doses can be up to 100 times higher than what is medically prescribed to patients who are suffering from various conditions. Anabolic steroids like Anadrol or liquid Anavar do not really tend to be taken over a continuous period of time, they are usually taken at certain time intervals in order for the body’s hormonal system a chance to really recover in between the cycles, also, if you were to take anabolic steroids over a continuous time without taking a break, the effects of the anabolic steroids would not be as good. This is because of the fact that the body’s responsiveness towards the drugs are decreased over a period of time, doing a continuous cycle can also cause your body to stop producing its own testosterone, so the breaks in between the cycles give your body a chance to rejuvenate its hormones, an effective post cycle therapy will also help with this as well. Many users of anabolic steroids also tend to combine different types of anabolic steroids so that they can try and maximise the effectiveness of the drugs, this is also known as stacking.

When it comes to anabolic steroid abuse, it tends to work a little differently to when people abuse other types of drugs and they do not have a short-term effect on the brain. When people abuse other types of drugs, something called dopamine is released which is the thing that causes the feeling of being high, when anabolic steroids are abused, there is not neurotransmitter dopamine increased. Although there can be some more long term effects that anabolic steroids can have on the brain including the brain pathways and chemicals being released that can have an effect on people’s mood. Users who abuse anabolic steroids notice that they become far more aggressive and if this gets too bad, this can lead to a number of psychiatric problems. These extreme mood swings are commonly referred to as “roid rage”, even though many users who are abusing anabolic steroids report that they feel good whilst using steroids, but research has been done which has found that use of steroid Dianabol or Anadrol results in users get very jealous, become easily irritated, suffer from delusions and start to become paranoid.

However, when anabolic steroids are abused, they do not cause the same kind of high that you get from other drugs when you abuse them although this does not mean that there is not an addictive value to anabolic steroids. This is because of the fact that many users spend lots of money and time into trying to buy steroids on a regular basis which is a sign of addiction, also, people who abuse anabolic steroids have been shown to have put strains on relationships and friendships which is another obvious sign of addiction. So it is possible to become addicted to anabolic steroids even though users become addicted to it for different reasons compared to people who become addicted to other types of drugs, abusers of anabolic steroids can potentially also go through withdrawal symptoms when they stop taking them. Some of these withdrawal symptoms include insomnia (or just general problems with sleeping), decreased sex drive, loss of appetite, mood swings, becoming easily fatigued, steroid cravings and restlessness. When it comes to these withdrawal symptoms, one of the most dangerous ones is when the user becomes depressed, if these depressed feelings are kept up for a long duration of time, it can lead to suicidal thoughts and even suicide attempts, so the withdrawal symptoms are not to be taken lightly.
